Chengelo’s Under-11 and Under-13 Teams Win at Amano Tag Rugby

Chengelo continued their successful streak in sports competition as they performed superbly to secure titles at the Amano Tag Rugby competition in Chingola. The long journey to Amano started on Friday morning and, after a good night’s rest at the school, they were ready for action on Saturday morning.

The tournament started with the participating schools getting involved in some training sessions for Musenga School which is local to Amano. This gave a chance for some children who are more experienced in tag rugby to pass on their knowledge and skills to those who are unfamiliar with the game.

When the competitive games started, the Chengelo players impressed with their excellent team work and great ability. The under-13 boys’ and girls’ teams won their first games against Simba convincingly and showed many of the Chengelo core values throughout. The under-11 mixed team also played well, winning their first game 9 – 7 against Amano.

Staff were invited to make a mixed team to take on some of the pupils’ teams but were left embarrassed most of the time by the speed and agility shown by the younger players! The Chengelo under-11 team especially enjoyed beating the staff team 3-2.

The under-13 boys’ team continued to sweep all challenges aside as they came out victorious against Amano and Musenga. The under-13 girls’ team came close to a clean sweep but lost 3-2 to Amano.

The under-11 mixed team and under-13 boys’ team finished in first place after winning every game. The under-13 girls’ team were unlucky to finish as runners up but performed well overall. There was more cause for celebration as Brooke was recognised as the best under-13 girl at the tournament.

The Chengelo coaches had the difficult task of selecting the best player from each Chengelo team. In all honesty, the award could have gone to any player from any team as every member was an important part of the team, contributing massively in different ways. The coaches eventually decided on Luyando (under-11 mixed), Chimya (under-13 boys) and Grace (under-13 girls).

Our thanks to Amano for hosting such a great tournament and also accommodating our teams on Friday night. Thanks to the Chengelo coaches who had prepared the teams and for the staff who travelled with the team to take care of the pupils.

Finally, well done to all the Chengelo players. You were amazing!
