Chengelo Girls Claim ISAZ Primary Division 1 Athletics Title

Chengelo took boys and girls teams to compete at the ISAZ Midlands Primary Athletics at Martin House School in Chisamba on Friday 1st June. After finishing seventh out of sixteen schools last year (without an under-13 team!) they were placed in Division 1 with seven other Lusaka schools.
The students left Chengelo at 5am and arrived at Martin House just before 9am, a few minutes before the first race. However, this didn’t faze Grace Ngungu, who won the 1500m in a new ISAZ record time! This was the longest race of the day, with other distances such as 1200m all the way down to the 200m as well as the short sprints featuring on the programme.
In the field events, Chengelo claimed some important victories. Nothando Nhliziyo won her under-11 long jump competition with a jump of 3.24m and Liseli Muyaba claimed an ISAZ record in the under-9 girls’ high jump. The boys teams came up against some tough opponents but consistent second and third-place finishes helped their cause. However, Raphael scored maximum points for Chengelo by winning the 80m sprint.
23 of the 25 team members were from the Primary school but the group was complimented by a couple of under-13 girls from the Secondary section. One of these was Brooke Muselela, who impressed the crowd to win the 200m and finish second in both the high jump and long jump.
The relays were exciting as always. Through their hard work in the weeks prior to the event, the under-13 girls team sped to victory in the penultimate race of the day.
Overall, it was a successful day, with the Chengelo girls picking up the accolade of overall champions and the team as a whole finishing in second place.
Thank you to all the parents who came to support their pupils and to Martin House for hosting the event so well. Finally, well done to all the participants, you have done Chengelo proud again!
